The passage of time and memories are major themes weaving through my alternative and traditional photographically based imagery. I work on multiple bodies of work at the same time.
Alternative Photographic Images 1. “Out of Focus Series” As I was watching the generation before me failing in health, I took portraits of my family and friends around me. These out of focus encaustic covered photographs represent the murkiness of depression and my relationships with others dealing with the aging relatives. 2.The encaustic based series called “House Series” features abstract houses collaged with family photographs and memorabilia. This work began over three years ago when my parents moved into an assisted living facility and I had the task of sorting and purging memorabilia in their home where they resided for fifty years. 3. “Wood Series” Aside from my encaustic house collages, I preserved memories by printing, painting, and carving portraits into wood.
Traditional Film Documentary Projects 1. I started documenting over a decade ago my hometown of Columbus, Ohio on a dare when a friend said, “ I bet you can’t do a straight black and white documentary series.” 2. Fifty-years after the Ohio native Berenice Abbott documented U.S. Rt. 1, a 2,209-mile highway that stretches from Ft. Kent Maine to Key West Florida, I retraced her steps, exploring the diversity of this country along the way. Like Berenice I have over 2,000 black and white negatives.
